Quick Facts: God in America

  • 3 in 4 Americans believe "God has a plan for me. 
  • 57% of Americans think that God rewards faithfulness with success and happiness.
  • 1 in 5 Americans understand the Earth to be the center of the solar system.
  • $100 Billion dollars a year "donated" to religions in the U.S. (est.)
  • 83% of Americans identify with a religious denomination, (see chart below for more detailed breakdown)
    • 42% (~56 million people) attend a church service at least once a week.
    • 1 in 3 churchgoers pay a tithe to their congregation.

  • 20% of Americans believe that God is opposed to a heavily-regulated economic system.

These statistics allow us to draw some staggering (and scary) conclusions...

  • Fewer than 5% of the U.S. population claim a faith outside of the Judeo-Christian mainstream
  • Barely one in ten Americans (10.8%) is not affiliated with a congregation, 
  • denomination, or other religious group
  • The number of Evangelical Christians in America is rapidly approaching 33% of the population
